A cultural counterpoint - from high-tech to low tech

Indonesia

A stunning archipelago of over 13,000 tropical islands, Indonesia links Australia to Asia. Unspoiled jungles and miles of pristine beaches flank active volcanoes that bubble near the surface. Whether you chill in Bali or dive into hectic Jakarta, Indonesia's a land brimming with natural and cultural gems that captivate the first-timer and returning visitor alike. Anyone wishing to travel to Asia should definitely check out the Southeast.

Laos

Take away all the cell phones and the DVDs and Laos looks much like it has for centuries. Temples dot the landscape in most parts of this peaceful, developing nation. Change comes slowly, but for now Laos offers even a casual traveler an intriguing peek into Buddhist culture. The perfect spot for respectful backpackers to trek some truly unspoiled trails.

Malaysia

Two extremes - from postcard-perfect national forests and marine parks with beaches that stretch on forever to high end resorts skimming the surface of Malaysia's hidden treasures. Experience small town culture, relaxing shopping in capital city Kuala Lumpur, history, culture and some of the best eating in Southeast Asia.

Singapore

Casual travelers, unable to look past the steel and concrete, quickly dismiss Singapore as one giant mall. But the country's unique style, culture and identity stems from its mix of inhabitants from China, India, Arabia and Britain. A sprinkling of spices, languages and superstitions, there's more to Singapore than meets the eye.

Thailand

Bungalows on a deserted beach, full moon parties, bargain shopping, royal palaces and religious Wats make Thailand one of the most exciting and diverse destinations in Southeast Asia. Whether you're looking for extreme sporting adventures, leisurely boat rides through the canals of Bangkok or a night on the town where anything goes - Thailand never disappoints.

Vietnam

From the breathtaking views in the northern mountainous region of Sapa to the floating markets of the Mekong Delta in the South, Vietnam caters to the modern tourist while proudly retaining its colorful history and culture. There's no more off-the-beaten-track than Vietnam, so be prepared to get caught up in the tourist trap the moment you step off the plane.
