Roadtrips present the perfect excuse to throw caution to the wind and explore the local flavors of places you pass through. Boone Tavern Inn mixes the town's tradition of old-world style with fresh and exciting meals. Accented by spoon bread and a heaping helping of Southern charm, you'll leave oddly satisfied and yet still wanting more. My first meal at the Tavern consisted of cornbread soufflé, or what locals refer to as “an excuse to get more butter into your mouth,” accompanied by browned pork tenderloins smothered in a thick, sweet apple sauce, giving the dish a distinct local flavor.
Of course, a great meal deserves a great dessert. If you go, wrap up with a savory lemon cheesecake soufflé on a ginger snap crust. Be sure to pack your fat pants before you visit this region, because you're gonna need 'em.
While you're enjoying some time outdoors, stop in at the Main Street Café. Owned and operated by Sune Frederiksen, the cozy café serves both lunch and dinner and boasts the “best salad in town.”
The café employs local and foreign students from Berea College, and during school semesters you can order lunch in English, French, Danish and a host of other languages.
The menu is as light and airy as the musical instruments decorating the walls and the bamboo lining the floor. The Greek wrap, with chicken breast, feta cheese, vegetables and special sauces rolled in a green vegetarian pita, makes a healthy bite while out strolling through the town.
Again, don't abstain from dessert. Carrot and hummingbird cakes made perfect companions to my giant mug of freshly brewed coffee. But if you only have room for one slice of cake during your time in Berea, make it the German Chocolate. One bite of this delight and you'll swear off all other desserts.
Located on the corner of Main Street at a junction that connects several counties, this former department store was previously known as Tiffany's of the South. The building sat vacant for years, until Jim Davis reopened it as a café in August of 2005.
While filled with college kids most of the time, it's a welcoming and breezy place to sit and enjoy a steaming cup of mocha - especially since the cups are all bottomless. The fare is prepared fresh and served with a smile, and if you're rushing off on your next roadtrip, a selection of tasty sandwiches and wraps keep you satisfied until your next pit stop.
