Mosques, safaris and sunsets

Tunisia

  • Tunis Medina - This great mosque stretches across various architectural and decorative styles. Since 1979, UNESCO has recognized the medina as a World Heritage Site because of its 700 monuments.
  • El Djem - Second only to the one in Rome, the grand coliseum remains the most impressive Roman monument in Africa. El Djem was built approximately AD 200 and was the scene of many bloody battles. Tour it and soak in the amazing collection of mosaics.
  • Kairouan - The third-largest city in the country and the fourth-holiest center in the Islam religion, this city is a pilgrimage site for people around the world. The Mosque of Iqba, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, features an off-center minaret and so many columns you may go blind counting them. While there, explore the carpet market - Kairouan is famous for its knotted and woven rugs.
  • Matmata - You may recognize the dwellings that made this place famous. The Berbers carved into the soft sandstone hills to create pit dwellings, taking advantage of natural temperature control. People from all over visit these inhabited caves, which were made famous in the Star Wars films. Book a room in one of the converted caves and stay the night.

Kenya

  • Amboseli National Reserve - Since 2005, all revenue generated in this illustrious reserve, shadowed by Kilimanjaro, benefits the local Masai communities. Small in space, big on animals, a safari here almost guarantees spotting some of the 50 larger species that live in the park including elephants, zebras and black rhinos.
  • A Masai Tribal Village- The Masai are known for their traditional dances and bright red warrior costumes. A safari without a stop at one of their villages constitutes a regrettable missed opportunity. While there, try some of the local drink: cow's blood mixed with milk.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park - Tens of thousands of pink flamingos descend upon this lake, also home to black and white rhinos, zebras and hippos.
  • Mount Kenya- One of the most impressive landscapes in all of eastern Africa, Mount Kenya has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Mountain climbers and those in search of great scenery flock to this jagged peak each year.

Morocco

  • Tangier - Tangier harbor, with its turquoise water and bleached buildings lining the shore, welcomes you to this tiny paradise filled with poets and princes. A mishmash of European architectural influences shaped this city of free spirits. For a break from the city, head out to the Caves of Hercules.
  • Marrakesh - Inside the miles of unbroken walls surrounding the city, a chaotic mix of markets, festivals, hippies and intellectuals call this ancient architecture home.
  • Ait-Ben-Haddou - A place of choice for filmmakers, the crumbling sandcastles of this crossroad town make a great oasis to recharge your batteries. Soak in the relaxed atmosphere of the mountains and watch the sunset lingering on the horizon.
  • Volubilis - The best-preserved ruins in the country stretch across 100 acres (40ha). Volubilis once served as a central Roman administrative city. It remained inhabited until the 18th century and now lives on as a fabulous outdoor museum.
