- Ferry to Lévis - To admire the Château Frontenac and surrounding quartiers,hop aboard the Lévis Ferry and view it from the other side of the St Lawrence River. Ferries run every half hour in summer or hourly in winter. $2.65USD adults; seniors and children receive a discount.
- Tour of Basse-Ville (Lower Town) - In the early nineties, Basse-Ville, a name distinguishing the lower portion of the city from Haute-Ville (Upper Town) looked abandoned and uninviting. After some heavy remodeling, the neighborhood thrives once again. Filled with artsy shops, antique stores, galleries, funky bistros and cafés, Basse-Ville now rivals areas more popular with tourists.
- Lazy Afternoons at an Outdoor Café - Quebec City perfects the art of outdoor lounging throughout the hot but short summer. Grab a table anywhere in the Quartier du Petit-Champlain, or the fabulous Grande-Allée in Haute-Ville near the parliament building and enjoy a café au lait or a local beer from one of the province's many microbreweries.
- Les Plaines d'Abraham, Parc des Champs-de-Bataille (Plains of Abraham, Battlefields Park) - Better known to locals as "Les Plaines" for short, this park set the stage for the final battle between the French Montcalm and the English Wolf. The French lost and the British Commonwealth absorbed Quebec. Reenactments of this famous battle occur during the summer. Stroll the park or pack a picnic and soak in a fantastic view of the St. Lawrence River.
- Ghost Tours of Quebec - Explore the city at night and relive its haunted past. The tour begins at the Petit Champlain but who knows where it will end. Make reservations in summer - space is limited. Tours: 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Open May 1 to October 31.
Quebec City Side Trips
- Parc National de la Jacques Cartier - This provincial park, located 24 miles (40 km) north of Quebec City, offers a break from the tourist-jammed old city. Outdoor adventures include canoe-camping, cross-country skiing, cycling, dogsledding, fishing, hiking and many water sports. Admission: $3.50USD adults; discounts for children and seniors.
- Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré - People come from all over the world to pray for miracles at this shrine located 21 miles (35km) from Quebec City. Bilingual guided tours Monday to Saturday at 1 p.m.
- Ile d'Orleans - Located 10 miles (16km) northeast of Quebec City, the island has officially become the city's local market. During harvest season, stroll the island's strawberry fields or apple orchards and pick your own. Take some time to nip into one of the many cafés and waste away an afternoon on a patio with a superb view of the city's skyline.
