Carry On Luggage Size
When it comes to flying, bigger definitely isn't better
Although size and weight restrictions vary widely from airline to airline and destination to destination, follow the "keep it simple" policy. Go small, light and safe. While you'll pack substantially more for a month-long trek through Europe than for a weekend getaway to Aruba, it pays to distill your stuff with a priority list. Remember, too, that your carry-on can encompass one personal bag, which can include a briefcase, purse, laptop or backpack.
Carry-on Luggage
Restrictions for carry-ons are just as strict as those for checked luggage - and often just as confusing. While cramming your carry-on can be a great way to pack some extras, bending the rules usually results in full-throttle frustration at the boarding gate. You'll find bag-sizers at the gate, but individual airlines also publish their restrictions online.
- Domestic carriers - Most domestic airlines allow carry-ons that measure no more than 45 linear inches and weigh no more than 40 pounds. Anything bigger or heavier must be checked, which can cost you more money. There are exceptions to the rule, though. For example, Alaska Airlines allows bags that are 51 linear inches but restricts weight to 20 pounds, while United Airlines follows the 45-inch rule but permits carry-ons that weigh up to 50 pounds.
- International carriers - Many have the 45-linear-inch restriction in place, with some relatively minor variations, but the weight limits are highly disparate. Italian carrier Alitalia limits carry-on luggage weight to a measly 11 pounds, while first-class passengers flying with Korean Airlines can bring up to 40 pounds of luggage into the cabin.
Checked Luggage
Most airlines allow two pieces of checked luggage regardless of the destination, but some charters restrict you to one bag. The most common size allowance for checked bags is 62 linear inches, but the weight restrictions fluctuate widely depending on the airline, class of ticket and destination. If you've spent your beach vacation collecting rocks, you'll pay extra to get them home.
- Domestic carriers - Travelers flying within the United States are generally allowed a maximum weight of 50 pounds per bag in economy class and 70 pounds in first or business class. International flights to some destinations increase the weight allowance - Continental flights to Brazil allow 70 pounds per bag in economy class.
- International carriers - Listing the weight restrictions for every major airline would take more words than you care to read. Suffice it to say, weight limits range from 40 pounds per bag to double that or more. Our advice is to check with your travel agent or call the airline yourself before you pack.
