Best Cruise Lines

Different stokes for different cruising folks

The definition of best varies from person to person, and even trip to trip. To help you find the cruise experience that will really float your boat, we've outlined the most popular cruise lines and their approach to the high seas. Whether you're looking for intimate luxury vacation cruises or a non-stop fun-fest, we've looked at the food, activities, nightlife, staterooms, shore excursions and even provided a glimpse of your fellow passengers.

  • Carnival Cruise Line - With an emphasis on fun, these family-friendly ships boast crazy colors, lots of kid's programs, escapes for parents and some of the most fun on the water or off. You don't have to leave the ship to have a blast, although the shore excursions are memorable, too.
  • Celebrity Cruise Line - Michelin star dining, vintage wines, original art, and unparalleled enrichment programs put Celebrity at the top of the luxury cruise lists.
  • Costa Cruises - Italian-owned, Costa caters more to continental tastes than American-based cruise lines. Spacious rooms, Italian-inspired cuisine and language lessons will make you think you've slipped into your own Roman Holiday.
  • Disney Cruise Line - These floating theme parks are Disney from bow to stern. The restaurants, music, floor shows and décor are all inspired by a classic Disney character or movie. While these cruises appeal to children of all ages, you don't have to be a kid to enjoy one.
  • MSC Cruises - Food, hospitality and service are truly Italian. Although the prices tend to be discounted, they don't cut corners on service or hospitality.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line - The freestyle specialists, this cruise line takes the 'whatever' attitude. It's pretty much whatever you like in all aspects, from dining to dress code, onboard activities to exit strategies.
  • Seabourn Cruises - One of the few cruise lines that includes alcohol and gratuities. You won't be 'nickel and dimed' to death on this cruise. All rooms are suites and all come with a personal steward, champagne and room service. And that's just the start.
  • Windstar Cruises - Often voted best small cruise ship in the world, the private-yacht feel sets this cruise line apart. Don't expect floor shows and bingo - with between 150 and 300 passengers, the emphasis is on exploring the high seas, not being entertained.

My husband and I have been on four cruises so far. We have gone on Celebrity, Princess and Norwegian lines. The best one is Celebrity. The Norwegian was ok, but we will never go on the Princess line again. The waiter wasn"t very nice. I do not eat seafood, and when dinner came, the waiter always tried to get me to order something that had seafood in it. My husband was kind of big and when he went to order desert, the waiter made the commit of "do you really think you need that. With that kind of service we weren't going to give him a very good of a tip, but the tips for everything was on our bill at the end of the cruise. When we go home my husband called Princess Cruise line and told them what happened. In so many words they said "to bad, so sad". When we were on the Norway, I like that you can pay for a card to get as much soda you want. I do not drink and my husband will drink wine, but if it is only him, he won't get any unless you can just get a glass full. On Celebrity, the waiter and every one was really nice, when you ordered meat and told him how you liked it cooked, you never had to tell him again for the whole cruise. So if anyone is going on a cruise for the first time, go on Celebrity. When they say they earned 5 stars, they really earned it. Oh yes, one morning while we were on the Celebrity, we got up, dressed to go get breakfast, we go to the elevator and I had for gotten something, so I went back to our room and it was already made up. the steward only has 8 rooms. That is what I call fast service. Won't go on Princess again!!!
